Sonic passing through Toxic Caves.
Toxic Caves is the lowest level inside the Veg-O-Fortress. In addition to flaming land pieces and the fortress's pinball defense system looping around like in Casino Night Zone, it is a highly polluted area, filled with pools of radioactive waste that has mutated the Badniks stationed there.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik's Tyranny[]
Having found a way into the Veg-O-Fortress via its pinball defense system, Sonic arrived in Toxic Caves. However, he was soon grabbed by Rexxon, one of the mutant Badniks on that level, who brought him before the boss of Toxic Caves: Scorpius. Fortunately, Sonic took both of them out with a ricochetting Sonic Spin, before continuing onward through the Toxic Caves until he reached Lava Powerhouse. (StH: #6)
