Sam Speed is the uncle of Christopher Thorndyke, presumably on his mother’s side, and leader of the Speed Team. As a police officer who pursues high-speed criminals with a race car, he was the fastest racer on his world until Sonic the Hedgehog showed up, and the pair quickly developed a friendly rivalry.

When it comes to speed, Sam sees Sonic as a rival.

• Being that Sam is Chris’ uncle and his first name is Sam, his name is based on the patriotic fictional character, Uncle Sam.
