Orbinaut was a sea urchin-based classic badnik created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik. One of the newer classic badniks, it specialized in utilizing floating maceballs. However, they were soon deemed obsolete and replaced by more effective forces.
History[]
Dr. Ivo Robotnik's Tyranny[]
The first prototype Orbinaut was created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who unveiled it at a presentation in Renobotnik. There, Robotnik demonstrated Orbinaut by having it knock out of Sonic, who was in the crowd, with its maceballs. Orbinaut would then accompany Robotnik while he tormented Sonic with his Giant Pinball Machine. When Sonic broke free, Orbinaut attacked Sonic again, only for the hedgehog to deflect his maceballs with a Sonic Spin. Following that, after Universalamander's threat had passed, Orbinaut joined Robotnik on a company picnic to celebrate the doctor's return before resuming his terrorizing activities. Soon, he and Buzzbomber caught Tails. Before they could kill him though, Tails managed to escape and destroy both of them. (StH: #1, #4)
Some Orbinauts were later summoned to Mobius Concert Hall to capture the Knothole Freedom Fighters. However, said group rendered the Orbinauts harmless by shrinking them with Snively's reduction device, leaving the miniscule Badniks to return to Robotnik. (StH: #8)
Orbinaut also saw Robotnik show fear regarding a robot dentist. Oddly enough, rather than being in the Robo Hobo Jungle along with the rest of Robotnik's old Badniks, he was still around by the time Mecha Madness had backfired, informing Robotnik that Sonic was spotted in the badlands. He was also seen at Rusty's, where he and several others fought Sonic and Bunnie Rabbot (StH: #9, #40, SSS: #15)
Misfit Badnik Island[]
When Sonic headed for Island of Misfit Badniks, he walked into a brawl with many badniks, Orbinaut among them. Orbinaut had the unenviable task of being a referee in a "Bighorn Challenge" between Sonic and Pseudo-Sonic, which sank the island. Their plan for revenge, enlarging Pseudo-Sonic, was waylaid by the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters. Orbinaut saw them interfering, and took on P.B. Jellyfish, and lost. Big Fluke smashed the badniks, the island, and the enlarged Pseudo-Sonic. (StH: #170, #185)
Genesis[]
Orbinauts in Labyrinth Zone.
A small team of Orbinauts reappeared underwater in the Labyrinth Zone during Operation: Clean Sweep, where they attacked Sonic and his group. Making a hole in a wall, Sonic created a drain which sucked in him, Sally, Rotor, Antoine and the Orbinauts. Emerging from a waterfall, the Orbinauts and Antoine fell into the depths while the rest escaped. (StH: #227)
Personality[]
As a classic badnik, Orbinaut possesses a limited A.I. Other than that, they are openly hostile towards their enemies and obey Dr. Ivo Robotnik's orders without question. (StH: #1, CSE)
Abilities[]
The Orbinauts' primary abilities lie in their four orbital maceballs. By spinning around, they enable the Orbinauts to float in the air. In addition, they can be launched at targets with deadly accuracy and the force of a truck. However, its maceballs are easily deflected. (StH: #1, #4)
Background information[]
- Orbinaut is based on the badnik from the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game for the Sega Genesis console. In western releases, the name "Orbinaut" was used for two similar Badniks in the game: The blue version with orange maces (named Unidasus in Japan) which launch all four maceballs, and the green version with yellow maces (named Uni Uni in Japan) which keeps its maceballs in orbit around it.
- A couple of pinkish purple robots resembling Orbinaut, oddly enough, appeared in a newly discovered Zone where Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles fought. These robots were presumably destroyed when the zone exploded. (SVK)
