–Knuckles the Echidna, SU: #69

Knuckles the Echidna is the last Mobian Echidna known to inhabit the world and the Guardian of both Angel Island and the Master Emerald. While his primary concern is protecting his home from invaders, certain threats-particularly those posed by Dr. Eggman-have been enough to persuade him to leave the island at times and join forces with Sonic the Hedgehog and other heroes to protect the world.

Early Adventures[]

Sonic and Knuckles First Encounter

Knuckles ambushes Sonic on their first meeting.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles History

Knuckles attempts to stop Dr. Eggman from stealing the Master Emerald.

Knuckles spent most of his life living alone on Angel Island, keeping watch over the Master Emerald. This isolation came to an end when Dr. Eggman arrived on the island following his latest defeat at the hands of Sonic the Hedgehog. Knuckles was soon persuaded that Sonic and his sidekick Tails were out to steal the Master Emerald, and opposed their journey across the island starting with ambushing Sonic and scattering his collected Chaos Emeralds. Unbeknownst to him, however, Sonic and Tails were looking to stop Eggman, who had decided to steal the Master Emerald for himself. After a brief scuffle, Knuckles eventually befriended Sonic and Tails after Eggman stole the emerald himself. Knuckles, worn from the battle and from Eggman after trying to stop the thief, showed Sonic and Tails the path to reach Eggman. After Eggman was defeated and expelled from the island, the Master Emerald was safely returned. Dr. Eggman then dispatched his lackey, Julian Snively, to steal the emerald once again, with the diminutive villain employing an Eggrobo to do so. However, Knuckles successfully recovered the Master Emerald, putting a stop to the doctor's plan for good. (VG: S3aK, SK; StH: #271; SU: #70)

Knuckles would later be tricked by Eggman once again, this time into believing Sonic had been going on a rampage as Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds. Agreeing to let Eggman watch the Master Emerald, who he had believed had cleaned up his act, Knuckle waited for Sonic to show up at Cascade Temple Zone, one of the Eastwatch Islands, under the orders of Eggman. After springing a trap on Sonic, Tails, and Amy, the trio destroyed the trap, revealing Knuckles inside a contraption. After demanding Sonic hand over the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic helped Knuckles realize he was once again tricked by Eggman, this time into handing him the Master Emerald to power his new super-weapon, the Mega Drive, which Eggman still needed the seven Ancient Gears for. With the four of them forming a team, they encountered and defeated Eggman, retrieved an Ancient Gear, and saved captured animals. (SMD)

After arriving at Glitter Park Zone and defeating another badnik, the four heroes once again encountered Eggman, who was easily defeated thanks to Tails' strategy and the power of Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, with Sonic watching on in disappointment, realizing that he wanted to adventure by himself and at his own pace. After retrieving another Ancient Gear, the team traveled to Haunted Depths Zone, where Sonic suggested splitting up to cover more ground. After leaving the three, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy came across a giant badnik. After struggling to defeat it, they were finally victorious. They then felt a tremor and wondered if Sonic was okay. Deciding that they would meet Sonic at the next island, Eruption Ruin Zone, under the assumption that he was indeed okay, the traveling trio met up with Sonic and helped him reach a ledge that he could not reach. Sonic decided he would wait for his friends to reach the ledge as well, realizing that he preferred having his friends around with him after all. After teaming up to defeat Eggman once again, the team retrieved one more Ancient Gear, but their victory was cut short by Metal Sonic, who swooped in to steal the five Ancient Gears that Tails had as well as kidnap Amy. After Tails realized where Eggman and Metal Sonic could be hiding, Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails made their way to Eggman's new flying fortress. After handing over their Ancient Gear in exchange for Amy thinking that Eggman didn't have the seventh (since Eggman specifically asked for the "last" Ancient Gear from Sonic after stealing the five from Tails), the team realized that Metal Sonic had the last Ancient Gear inside of it. After the three defeated Metal Sonic and saved Amy, Eggman and Metal Sonic fled the fortress. After taking a look at the database on the fortress, Tails realized that there was a deep sea base directly under where they were and that the airship was only for supply shipments, Sonic decided that before pursuing the villains they should collect the seven Chaos Emeralds, which had a habit of showing up when they needed them. Sonic Adventure History

Chaos is released from the shattered Master Emerald.

A number of adventures later, Knuckles was once again keeping watch over the Master Emerald when Dr. Eggman hatched another nefarious plan. This time, he shattered the magic gemstone in order to release Chaos, an ancient water elemental long imprisoned inside the stone. With the emerald's fragments scattered across the planet, Angel Island fell to the ocean surface, and Knuckles was forced to leave the island in order to recover them. After finding a few, Knuckles was pulled into the past of the Mystic Ruins by Tikal's spirit, when the Knuckles Clan stilled thrived, where he saw Tikal trying to convince her father, Pachacamac, to abandon his war efforts. Back in the present, Knuckles spotted Dr. Eggman and a shine in the doctor's hand, which he believed to be an Emerald Shard but discovered it was a Chaos Emerald when he corned Eggman. Eggman called in Chaos 1, one of Chaos' transformations, and transformed it into Chaos 2, but Knuckles still recognized it and beat it, though afterwards, Eggman told Knuckles that Sonic was after the Emerald Shards too before leaving, which filled Knuckles' mind with doubts. After finding more Emerald Shards, Knuckles found Sonic and Tails. Seeing shines in Sonic's hands, Knuckles believed it was Emerald Shards and attacked the duo until Sonic dropped them, and they were revealed to be Chaos Emeralds. Eggman then showed up to nab the Emeralds, mocking Knuckles with how it was a trick to steal the Emeralds, and gave them to Chaos 2, turning it into Chaos 4. After defeating Chaos 4, Knuckles left to find the remaining Emerald Shards while Sonic and Tails chased Eggman's Egg Carrier. Knuckles was soon after sent back to the the past after finding more shards where he saw Tikal attempt to make Chaos leave the Altar of the Emeralds with the Chao. Finding himself back at the present-day altar, Knuckles tried restoring the Master Emerald, only to see it still missed a few pieces. From an image inside the Master Emerald, Knuckles saw the Egg Carrier and deduced it was there the last Emerald Shards were. Knuckles soon after stumbled upon E-102 Gamma and trailed it to trail the robot to the Egg Carrier where Knuckles found the remaining shards, only to be sent into the past again, this time to see the alter ablaze where he tried asking Tikal what was going on but was sent back home. Back on the Egg Carrier, Knuckles met Sonic as he was heading after Eggman, who left him to defeat Chaos 6. Knuckles subsequently beat Chaos and got its six Chaos Emeralds back before returning home with all the emeralds where he restored the Master Emerald, allowing it to hoist Angel Island back to the sky. Not long after, Angel Island fell down again, and Knuckles decided to find Sonic for advice, believing the Chaos Emeralds he got had something to do with it. Soon after, however, he found Eggman and was ambushed by Chaos, who took his Chaos Emeralds. After finding Sonic and Tails, Knuckles informed them of Chaos's return and that it would destroy the world with the Chaos Emeralds, before taking off himself to deal with the threat. Arriving in Station Square where Perfect Chaos was on a rampage, Knuckles found four of the now-drained Chaos Emeralds and brought them to Sonic while his other friends brought the remaining three, where he reluctantly agreed with Tails that Sonic could still harness the Chaos Emeralds' positive chaos energy to stop Chaos. After Super Sonic defeated Perfect Chaos, Knuckles looked on with content as Chaos was returned to a peaceful creature once more and departed with Tikal. (VG: SA/SADX, SU: #69)

Sonic Adventure 2 History

Knuckles shatters the Master Emerald.

At some point after these events, Knuckles made the acquaintance of archaeologist Relic the Pika, who had came to the island after it fell near the Mystic Ruins and convinced Knuckles to let her stay on the island. The next female visitor to the island was nowhere near as friendly: the thief Rouge the Bat attempted to steal the Master Emerald, only to be beaten to the punch by Dr. Eggman. In order to prevent the mad doctor from using the Emerald's power for his latest scheme, Knuckles shattered the Emerald himself. After Rouge berated him for his action, Knuckles began hunting down the shards before Rouge could get them. After gathering some shards on the way, Knuckles got lost inside the Aquatic Mine and ended up in Central City, where he met Tails and Amy, only for Amy to drag him into Sonic's latest adventure, where they were trying to stop Eggman from using the Eclipse Cannon to take over the world. Having located Eggman on Space Colony ARK, Knuckles led the group to Eggman's base, having seen both Eggman and Rouge enter it. Believing there was a space shuttle there that could take them to the ARK and destroy the Eclipse Cannon, Knuckles and the team infiltrated the base, where Knuckles found the keys to the center at Sonic's choice, before having a fight with King Boom Boo. At the shuttle's launch pad, Knuckles and the others were ambushed by Eggman with the Egg Golem. While Sonic defeated the Egg Golem, Knuckles and the others got a space shuttle to take off in. While en route to Space Colony ARK however, the shuttle hit a stray asteroid, causing the cargo bay to open and releasing all the Emerald Shards Knuckles had stored there. Panicking, Knuckles tried taking control of the shuttle, only to make it crash on the asteroid. After landing, Knuckles left the group to find the lost shards. After finding some shards, Knuckles met Rouge again and fought her to a stalemate. However, as Rouge tripped into lava, Knuckles saved her life, only for Rouge to show ingratitude at him. Regardless, she returned her Emerald Shards as thanks. After restoring the Master Emerald, Knuckles left with it, but not before swallowing his pride and apologizing to Rouge for hurting her. No sooner, Knuckles found Sonic appearing in front of him when he escaped from a doomed capsule using Chaos Control with a fake Chaos Emerald, who told Knuckles to go help Tails and Amy while he destroyed the Eclipse Cannon. After the Eclipse Cannon was stopped, Knuckles and Sonic met Rouge, who told them that the ARK was on a collision course with planet. Knuckles and the others then saw a recording of Gerald Robotnik announcing to the world that the ARK's impact would destroy the planet as his revenge at humanity for the death of his granddaughter, Maria. Banding together with Eggman, Knuckles and the group came up with the plan to use the Master Emerald to deactivate the seven Chaos Emeralds, which was powering the cannon's core, to stop the Space Colony's crash course. When Knuckles and Sonic made it to the core, they were attacked by the Biolizard, but Shadow arrived and held it off. Knuckles used the Master Emerald and shut down the Chaos Emeralds, but the Biolizard warped outside the ARK and became the Finalhazard to keep the ARK on its collision course. Knuckles then saw Sonic and Shadow using the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic and Super Shadow to defeat the Finalhazard while he advised through transmission lines. After Super Sonic and Super Shadow beat the Finalhazard and brought the ARK back into orbit, Knuckles found Sonic returning alone, informing them that Shadow had seemingly died. Knuckles then asked Rouge what she planned to do and was content to hear she considered giving up treasure hunting, before they returned to Earth. (VG: SA2/SA2B, SU: #63, #69)

When Knuckles and Tails received a letter from Dr. Eggman, who claimed to have created "the ultimate weapon" to conquer the world and challenged them to stop him within three days, the two used the Tornado 2 to find Sonic and bring him the news. As Knuckles was confident they could handle it, he and Tails joined Sonic in stopping Eggman's scheme, officially forming Team Sonic. Beginning their mission by tracking Dr. Eggman, Team Sonic found the doctor at Ocean Palace, where they were attacked by the Egg Hawk. Though the team defeated the machine, Eggman escaped. Knuckles and Team Sonic then followed Eggman to Grand Metropolis, where the team freed the city from Eggman's control and escaped from the Power Plant, before running into Team Rose, who they managed give the slip. Arriving in Casino Park, Knuckles was taken back by the place, but was pushed on. As they got through the city, Eggman attacked them with his Robot Carnival, but Team Sonic defeated the horde. Following Eggman to Rail Canyon and only having until sunset, Knuckles and his team headed for Bullet Station and destroyed Eggman's base there. Team Sonic found Eggman in the Egg Albatross and destroyed it. It was then, however, that Knuckles and the team discovered that the Eggman they had been chasing was a copy and that the copy's challenge was to distract them while Eggman launched his Egg Fleet. As Sonic took off, Knuckles quickly followed him. Following Eggman through the jungle, Team Sonic met Team Dark and saw that Shadow was still alive. As an argument arose about who would chase Eggman, the two teams fought each other. After the battle, Team Sonic followed Eggman and Shadow to Hang Castle, where Knuckles teased Tails by saying that it could have been Shadow's ghost they saw. After infiltrating the castle and escaping Mystic Mansion, Team Sonic was attacked by Eggman's Robot Storm, but defeated it. After that, Team Sonic got to the Egg Fleet and went straight for the Final Fortress where they destroyed the colossal flagship's core. Team Sonic then found Eggman in his Egg Emperor and defeated him. After destroying much of the Egg Fleet, Knuckles teased Sonic with how he would have stood no chance without their help, but was surprised when Sonic agreed. Knuckles and Tails then watched Sonic escaping as Amy arrived. Later, Team Sonic and the other teams saw the return of Metal Sonic, who had been staging the team's adventures and impersonating Eggman so he could follow them and copy their data in a plan to conquer the world himself, as he transformed into Metal Madness. Seeing that the teams had collected all the Chaos Emeralds, the real Dr. Eggman came up with the plan of using them against Metal Sonic. When Sonic decided to face Metal Sonic alone, Knuckles insisted on going with him along with Tails. While Team Sonic charged the Chaos Emeralds, Team Rose, Team Dark and Team Chaotix fought Metal Madness to buy them some time. When Metal Madness transformed into Metal Overlord, Knuckles and Tails were given their own Super States by Sonic as he transformed into Super Sonic. The team then took off and defeated Metal Overlord. Back on the flagship, Knuckles watched Sonic leave, before chasing after Rouge once she said she would steal "someone else's treasure." Soon after, Knuckles joined Sonic and Tails as they headed off to find their next adventure. (VG: SH)

Shadow Game Flashback

Knuckles is left to be eaten by the Black Arms.

When a gaping hole opened up in the sky and the Black Arms descended from the clouds causing pandemonium in the city below, Knuckles worked with most of his friends and G.U.N.'s forces to repel their invasion of the planet. Knuckles arrived in a few different places during this adventure where he met up with Shadow in each place. In Glyphic Canyon, Knuckles attempted to assist G.U.N. by driving off the Black Arms infesting the area. Upon meeting Shadow, who had just been teleported to the ruins, Knuckles filled him in on the Black Arms around them and requested his assistance in clearing the area of the Black Arms. In Central City, Knuckles discovered that the Black Arms had set up bombs across the city that would destroy the entire city, a tragedy that Knuckles did not intend to come true. When there was only a few minutes left until the bombs would explode, Knuckles noticed Shadow had arrived and asked for help defusing the bombs, eventually succeeding in defusing enough bombs and managing to save the city. On the Black Comet, Knuckles assisted G.U.N. in attacking the Black Arms' base, with Knuckles planning to destroy the comet's core. On his way to the core, Knuckles came across Shadow and asked him for his help to get to the center. Eventually, Knuckles, along with Sonic, Tails, Amy, Rouge, and Dr. Eggman, once again met up with Shadow on the Black Comet. Shadow, who had gathered all of the Chaos Emeralds, was speaking with Black Doom, the leader of the Black Arms who commanded Shadow to give up the Emeralds so that they could begin the 'Ritual Of Prosperity'. Knuckles and the others, including Dr. Eggman, told Shadow not to listen to the alien leader. It was then revealed that Black Doom wished to harvest humans as an energy source. After taking the Emeralds from Shadow and using Chaos Control to warp the Black Comet down to the surface of the planet, Black Doom explained that he helped Professor Gerald create Shadow but only in return for the Chaos Emeralds, which were needed to bring the comet down to the surface, revealing that Shadow was actually created using Black Doom's DNA. As Eggman was in disbelief that his grandfather would betray the planet, Black Doom paralyzed everyone with a special gas and left them to be devoured by his alien offspring. As the end seemed near, Shadow suddenly heard Maria asking for help and he broke through the paralysis. Black Doom fled, leaving behind Shadow, the only hope for the planet. Eventually, Shadow used the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Shadow and fought Black Doom, who had transformed into Devil Doom, and in his super state used a super-powered Chaos Control to warp the Black Comet back into the planet's orbit and tear it apart with a blast from the Eclipse Cannon, saving the world and stopping the invasion. (VG: ShaH)

Knuckles worked together with the Chaotix-and their mutual friends Mighty and Ray-on multiple occasions. He would later engage Sonic in another clash over Chaos Emeralds, this time while the Hedgehog was accompanied by the robot Emerl. Another adventure found the Master Emerald threatened yet again by Eggman, this time piloting his diabolical Hyper Eggrobo. (VG: SA3, SB; StH: #271, SU: #59, #63)

Two Sides, Two Worlds[]

See also Knuckles Man.

Knuckles found himself in a whole new world after a Genesis Wave washed over the planet. He was almost immediately captured by Doctor Eggman and his new partner Dr. Wily, and turned into Knuckles Man, before being sent with his fellow Roboticized Masters-Tails Man, Shadow Man and Rose Woman-to steal a Chaos Emerald from the Mega City Bank, in Dr. Wily's home dimension. The group where then confronted by Proto Man, whom Knuckles Man quickly proceeded to engage. Knuckles Man managed to knock away Proto Man's shield, leaving him to Rose Woman to finish off, only for Mega Man to arrive and rescue his brother. After a brief battle, in which Knuckles Man was the first Roboticized Master to be stunned briefly by Mega Man's Mega Buster, the villains escaped to Mobius through a Warp Ring with Metal Sonic's aid. After dispersing, they rejoined the evil doctors, and later joined in an attack on Sonic and Mega Man after the two heroes and their allies joined forces. He was subsequently pulled from that battle along with most of the other Masters to pursue Proto Man. (StH: #249, SU: #51, #52, MM: #24)

Knuckles Man Turns Into Knuckles

Knuckles after being changed back from Knuckles Man

Eventually, Knuckles Man and Rose Woman were left the last Roboticized Masters standing, and engaged Mega Man and Sonic in a battle that led to their return to normal. Sonic teased Knuckles over his Roboticization, jokingly inquiring whether or not he was tricked into undergoing the process or kidnapped, either of which would have been embarrassing. Knuckles gained a measure of revenge, however, as Sonic was then set upon by a tearful Amy. After being introduced to Mega Man, Knuckles was eager to join the fight against the evil doctors, and joined Tails in going to reunite with Proto Man and the Chaotix. The team of heroes soon gathered together, and were joined by Shadow, E-123 Omega, Silver the Hedgehog, and Blaze the Cat. Unfortunately, the group found itself facing a massive army of Robot Masters led by Rouge Woman. Leaping right into the fight, Knuckles proved himself a formidable foe, overcoming Plug Man and reminding opponents Concrete Man and Stone Man of a fellow Robot Master named Guts Man. He was subsequently menaced by Ground Man, but escaped to pursue Gemini Man. (StH: #250, SU: #53, MM: #25) Knuckles subsequently encountered trouble while battling Knight Man, but recovered and dealt a shattering blow to Chill Man. Unfortunately, the Echidna and his friends eventually found themselves on the ropes, outnumbered and outgunned. Determined to give it his all, Knuckles decked Burner Man but was then astonished by the arrival of the original Light Labs Robot Masters under Elec Man, who came to their rescue. After being apprised as to their friendly status by Dr. Light, the heroes realized that their blue allies were taking too long for everything to be going well. At Knuckles' suggestion he, Dr. Light, and Proto Man boarded Rush and several hover boards to fly up to the Wily Egg.

Knuckles and Proto Man

Knuckles and Proto Man infiltrate the Wily Egg

Finding Sonic and Mega Man captured, Knuckles and Proto Man went after Eggman and Wily while Dr. Light freed them. The two red heroes continued their assault even as the doctors entered their Egg-Wily Machine X, and found their attacks extremely effective due to the doctors' mutual sabotage of each other. They had almost penetrated the battle machine when the doctors restored it using the Chaos Emeralds, making it more powerful than before. Knuckles briefly lamented that the doctors' hadn't stolen the Master Emerald, which he could have used to negate the Chaos Emeralds, just as the Super Genesis Wave began to spread across both realities. Before he and Proto Man could suffer harm at the doctors' hands, however, Super Sonic and Super Mega Man intervened, allowing the pair to retreat with Dr. Light. However, the wave proved too swift for them to escape, even as they passed the battle-damaged Bass, Metal Sonic, and Treble on their way out of the Wily Egg. However, Super Sonic was subsequently able to restore Mobius, though not without interference from Eggman. (MM: #27, SU: #54, StH: #251)

The Great Chaos Caper[]

From a readers perspective, this picks up from where the original pre-Super Genesis Wave continuity left off

The Shattered World Crisis affected Angel Island as it did the rest of the planet, and Knuckles was caught in the middle of it. As he watched, Chaos was thrown from the Master Emerald to the world's ravaged surface. Immediately thereafter, Tikal addressed him from within the Emerald and informed him of the situation, which she assured him was a phenomenon meant to occur. However, she also informed him that a powerful spirit was meant to participate in restoring the world, and that she sensed a weakness in that entity. As such, Knuckles determined to seek out the spirit so that Tikal could aid it. Fearing to leave the Master Emerald unguarded, he reluctantly approached Relic and her assistant Fixit to watch over the gemstone. Making his way to the surface, he traveled through the Sky Rail Zone, where he spotted Eclipse the Darkling's escape craft plummeting as it fled the destruction of the New Black Comet. (SU: #62, #63)

Continuing his journey, Knuckles ended up in Pumpkin Hill Zone, where he ran into some old allies: the Chaotix. Learning that they had been hired by Princess Sally to help locate the Chaos Emeralds, Knuckles agreed to help them, as he sensed an Emerald nearby. The group were forced to deal with the minions of Dark Gaia, and then ran into another opposing force: the Hooligans. The two groups initially battled, but halted their conflict when Bean pointed out that they were attacking each other over a Chaos Emerald that neither side had. Nack and his teammates then departed, while Knuckles was able to determine through his Emerald sense that the gem was underground in the Aquatic Mine, which he had previously visited. However, the pressures of his quest to find the spirit, his concern over Angel Island, and Vector's impatience grew to be too much for him, and he announced his intentions to leave. However, he then sensed the Emerald nearby-and the heroes found it in the hands of the spirit he had been looking for. (SU: #63, #64)

Taking both the spirit-whom Charmy dubbed "Chip"-and the Emerald into their custody, Knuckles and the Chaotix headed for the exit to the mine, only to run into the Hooligans again. To make matters worse, the biggest minion of Dark Gaia yet, the Dark Gaia Titan, appeared to attack them. The Hooligans took advantage of its appearance to seize Chip and the Emerald, blasting all the exits to the mine except the one that they took to escape before sealing it behind them. Left with only a flooded tunnel-too long to swim through without an air supply-to escape through, Vector reasoned upon a scheme that carried them along with water current to escape the cavern. They then intercepted the Hooligans, only to be attacked by the Titan again, but managed to trick Bean into attacking it. Recovering Chip and the Emerald, they sent the Hooligans fleeing with a sabotaged Chaos Emerald sensor. Knuckles then finished off the Dark Gaia Titan, and suggested that he take the Chaos Emerald and Chip back to Angel Island for safe-keeping. He and Chip return to Shrine Island and were met by Tikal, only for Relic to arrive with dire news: the island had been invaded. (SU: #65, #66)

A Series of Fights[]

After examining Relic and Fixit's findings regarding the invaders, Knuckles determined that the invaders were definitely not native to the island, meaning they had to be expelled. This led to a brief awkward moment with Relic, which was interrupted as Team Dark arrived-resulting in another awkward moment for Knuckles as Rouge believed Relic to be his girlfriend and Relic questioned what he had told people about her. After being informed by Team Dark of the presence of Eclipse and the Dark Arms, Knuckles reluctantly left Shadow with Relic and Fixit at the Master Emerald Shrine while he led Rouge and Omega to Red Mountain to search for the aliens. Along the way, he had to restrain Omega from blasting various parts of the environment, and was confronted by Rouge about whether he wanted anything else from his life besides protecting the island. The trio then came upon Eclipse's wrecked shuttle, but before they could enter, Fixit contacted them to warn them that Eclipse was attacking the shrine. Arriving after Eclipse had been driven off, Knuckles was enraged when Shadow informed him of his decision to move the Master Emerald to a G.U.N. facility for safe-keeping. When his and Relic's protests fell on the deaf ears of Shadow and his teammates, Knuckles resorted to force. Throwing Shadow from Shrine Island to the main island, he charged him, declaring that the Emerald would stay and Shadow would leave.(SU: #67, #68)

Knuckles Shatters Emerald Again

Knuckles once again shatters the Master Emerald.

After briefly fighting him near the Master Emerald Shrine, Knuckles used his considerable strength to throw Shadow to the Azure Lake Zone and pursued him there. While the fight proved difficult, Knuckles refused to give up, reflecting on the many misfortunes that had befallen the Master Emerald on his watch and vowing not to let it happen again. Unfortunately, his fight with Shadow allowed Eclipse and the Dark Arms to seize the Master Emerald. Breaking off their fight, the two heroes moved to intercept Eclipse and engaged him and his Dark Arms in battle. Though they gained the upper hand in the fight, Eclipse managed to escape defeat with the help of the Dark Arm known as Rhygenta. Ultimately, with the only other option being allowing Eclipse to escape with the Emerald, Knuckles shattered it for the second time in his life. Fortunately, Angel Island was kept aloft by the same forces holding the shattered planet in place, and Knuckles set off to recover the Master Emerald fragments yet again. (SU: #69, #70)

After recovering an Emerald shard from a mine, Knuckles-accompanied by Chip-ended up in Casino Park, where he sensed a powerful Chaos energy signature he believed to be a cache of shards. However, it turned out to be a Chaos Emerald that served as the prize for the Chaos Emerald Championship being held by Breezie the Hedgehog. After locating another shard that had been made into a necklace-and stealthily recovering it from its would be owner-Knuckles and Chip discovered that several of Knuckles' friends were taking part in the tournament. They were then approached by Scratch, who informed Knuckles that he was going to be late for his first match-unbeknownst to him, he had been added to the tournament roster by Espio. Realizing that this would allow him to secure the Emerald, Knuckles accepted and entered into a tough battle with Bark of the Hooligans. The two fought fiercely, well-matched in terms of strength, but Knuckles managed to knock out his larger opponent. This moved him on to the next round, where he would go up against Amy Rose. (StH: #268, #269) After Nack won against Bean, Amy and Knuckles began their fight. Amy got pumped to take down Knuckles and face Sonic in the finals, but started over-analyzing the situation and worrying about disappointing or hurting her Hedgehog hero. While she was distracted, Knuckles, unaware that she wasn't ready yet, easily defeated her with an explosive punch that sent her flying into the spectator seats. His next match was against Nack, who attempted to psych Knuckles out by bringing up his failure to protect the Master Emerald and his going overboard during the fight with Amy. Knuckles remained stoic the whole time, waiting for Nack to get in close enough for him to grab the Weasel and handily defeat him. With that, Knuckles moved on to the championship round against Sonic, with both of them arguing over who had won more of their previous battles. During the course of their bout, Knuckles got frustrated with Sonic showing more concern for how Breezie had obtained the Emerald than the battle, and again when he informed Sonic why he wasn't on Angel Island. The Hedgehog offered to throw the fight so that Knuckles could continue his quest, but Knuckles refused to let his rival off so easily. Their bout was interrupted by the Hooligans' sabotage of Casino Park's defenses, and the two heroes put aside their conflict to stop Metal Sonic from stealing Breezie's Chaos Emerald. Afterwards, with the Chaos Emerald in hand, Knuckles and Chip joined the Freedom Fighters, and were given an unexpected introduction to Sonic's Werehog form on the way back to the Sky Patrol. (StH: #270, #271)

While aboard the Sky Patrol, Knuckles briefed the Freedom Fighters on what had happened to the Master Emerald and his efforts to find its fragments; at the same time, he had to defend himself against Amy's grudge for her humiliating defeat in the tournament. Upon learning that he was relying upon his somewhat limited treasure hunting sense to find the fragments, Amy suggested helping him through the use of her Mystic Melody. Her first attempt proved promising, but Rotor Walrus was reluctant to let her go off when they needed her abilities to help them find the Gaia Temples. This worry was eventually resolved after Knuckles, Amy, and Bunnie Rabbot-D'Coolette went to the aid of Sonic, Antoine, and Chip in Apotos. After engaging yet another Dark Gaia Titan and recovering a Master Emerald shard from it, the heroes were informed by Sonic's squad of the Gaia Keys and Gaia Gate, which could be used to access the Gaia Temples without finding them. This opened the way for Amy and Knuckles to depart in search of the Master Emerald shards, and Knuckles took the opportunity to tease Sonic over his crestfallen reaction to the idea of Amy leaving. Knuckles and the Freedom Fighters would subsequently come to the aid of a G.U.N. unit that had been attacked by Metal Sonic, who had managed to steal the last Chaos Emerald from them. (StH: #272; SU: #75)

Worlds Unite[]

Knuckles soon joined the Freedom Fighters in traveling to Mobotropolis to deal with a new threat: that of M'egga Man, Mega Man turned into the minion of the otherworldly mechanical menace Sigma-1. He and the Freedom Fighters fought hard to defend the city from this attacker, but even the formidable Gemerl proved no match for M'egga Man's weaponry. As a result, Mobius and Earth 20XX were tied together by Sigma's Unity Engines, leading to a confrontation between M'egga Man and the Roboticized Sonic, now known as Sonic Man. It also led to a surprising alliance between the heroes of Mobius and the Robot Masters, who were joined by the cured Sonic and Mega Man and by the Maverick Hunters and Team Sticks. The larger force of heroes then boarded the Sky Patrol in order to hunt down Sigma. While aboard, Knuckles took the opportunity to work out, and Sticks the Badger told him she felt he could be stronger and bulkier. It wasn't long before the heroes arrived at the Lost Hex, where Sigma had established his base, only to find the Deadly Six and an army of Mechaniloids waiting for them. Knuckles and his comrades fought bravely, with Wood Man allowing the Echidna use of his Leaf Shield ability to attack Zazz. Unfortunately, the Zeti then used their powers to take control of the robots' bodies and set them upon their organic teammates. (StH: #273; MM: #50; SU: #77; SB: #9)

This conflict led to Knuckles engaging Break Man in a fight. Knuckles tried to reason with his opponent, but to no avail, for the Deadly Six's power was too great. Break Man suggested that they might take advantage of his nuclear power core to tip the odds in the heroes favor, but, knowing this would destroy him, Knuckles refused and instead encouraged Break Man to fight the Zeti's control, allowing Knuckles to defeat him while leaving him intact. Knuckles returned to the others, just in time to save Sally from Gemerl by punching the Zeti-manipulated robot. The heroes were driven back into the Sky Patrol by their manipulated allies, until the Deadly Six were defeated by the Egg-Wily Uppity Robot Scrambler Cannon. Sadly, the heroes would have no chance to rest, as Sigma appeared in a gigantic new body and unleashed his Maverick army upon the heroes. Knuckles and his comrades fought bravely, the Echidna facing off with Wheel Gator, but their exertions left them vulnerable. Most of the Mavericks scattered while a handful remained to finish them off, but help arrived in the form of heroes recruited by Sticks from the Street Fighter Zone. Knuckles was particularly impressed by Ken Masters' fighting abilities, and the work of their new allies allowed the heroes to scatter in pursuit of the other Mavericks, who had been dispatched to set up more Unity Engines. Knuckles and Quake Woman traveled to the world of Skies of Arcadia, where they helped defeat Tidal Makkoeen. Afterwards, they rejoined their friends for a massive battle with Sigma. It eventually fell to Super Sonic and Super Mega Man to defeat him, but reality was still left in dangerous condition. The actions of Xander Payne later undid all these events, and Knuckles and his comrades were returned to the times and places they had been before Sigma's attempt at conquest had begun. The Search Continues[]

Knuckles and Amy's search for the remaining shards led them to the Rocky Jungle Zone, where the two met up with Mighty the Armadillo, his companion Ray the Flying Squirrel, and their mentor, Moss the Sloth. Teaming up with the two travelers, Knuckles and Amy infiltrated the Soumerca Egg Army base. There, they successfully retrieved the shards secured by Egg Boss Thunderbolt, but not before Knuckles had engaged the chinchilla herself. (StH: #281, #282)

Back at Mighty and Ray's residence, Amy detected several shards on Westside Island, after which the two departed via Amy's Pink Cabriolet. However, during their trip, Knuckles grew pessimistic and worried about his ability to defend the Master Emerald, which Amy noticed and cheered him up with a brief pep talk. (StH: Sonic the Hedgehog #282; SU: #90)

Once arriving on the island, the two, by foot, made their way to Castle Acorn, only to find Team Dark there, who were in search of Eclipse. The two parties used a G.U.N. carrier to travel to the Mystic Cave Zone. Sensing the last few shards a ways down, Knuckles and the others descended into the Hidden Palace Zone, where they decided to cover more ground via splitting up. By elimination, Knuckles and Shadow got with each other, who were not quite on the best of terms, and soon crossed paths with Nixus the Echidna, a disguised Walter Naugus. Knuckles, both awed and in disbelief to find another echidna, left with him to reassemble the Master Emerald somewhere safe, while Shadow rescued Amy and Rouge from a crystallized version of E-123 Omega. After explaining the Trolls' background to Knuckles, the two echidnas arrived at the chamber, only for Nixus to shapeshift back into his true self after crystallizing Knuckles. Walter tried reassembling the Master Emerald on his own, but his lack of experience with them made the process harder than necessary. While Knuckles broke out, Walter distracted him long enough to kick him out of the chamber and seal it off. Shortly after, he met up with his allies, only for Crystal Omega to ambush them, cutting the reunion short. (SU: #87, #88)

While the group engaged Crystal Omega, Knuckles soon sensed Walter had assembled the Master Emerald and was ready to give up, when Amy reminded him that the wizard had simply saved them a step, and that all they had have to do now was get the gem back. Knuckles then noticed a crack in Crystal Omega's armor, which he and his allies used to free Omega of this form and bring him back to his senses. With the badnik's help, the group broke into the chamber only to be crystallized by the vile Walter.

With the heroes trapped, Walter departed with the Master Emerald and Amy in tow. However, Amy's words of motivation motivated Knuckles enough to break himself and Team Dark out. Sensing the Master Emerald's location, Knuckles led Team Dark into a confrontation Walter, securing both the Master Emerald saving Amy. As the planet's broken fragments began shifting back into place Team Dark kept Walter busy while Knuckles and Amy returned the Master Emerald to Angel Island's Sky Sanctuary Zone via a Teleporter in the cave. Fortunately, Knuckles and Amy returned the Master Emerald to where it belonged in time, preventing Angel Island from meeting its doom. With Walter imprisoned, Knuckles retrieved a faux Master Emerald from the Hidden Palace Zone to use to make stealing the true gem harder for thieves. (SU: #89, #90)

"Classic" Knuckles

Knuckles is a red echidna with purple eyes. He bears a white crescent mark on his chest. Officially, he's slightly taller than Sonic. He wears white gloves similar to boxing gloves and has two spiked knuckle-claws on each hand. He wears green, yellow and red footwear with a metal "Lego" plate atop each shoe. Like many characters in the comic, he initially was given light-blue eyes before SEGA established his eye color as purple.

Knuckles is an incredibly strong individual, and served as the muscle of Team Sonic; his techniques include a punch around which a fiery aura appears that is devastating to anything hit by it. He can also glide through the air using his long spines, and his namesake spikes are both effective in combat and for climbing up walls or digging. In addition to his combat prowess, Knuckles is skilled to a degree in footwork and utilize the Spin Dash attack as seen during his fight with Shadow. Due to his connection to the Master Emerald, Knuckles has limited mystical abilities, including being able to sense the presence of Master Emerald shards or Chaos Emeralds and hone in on their position. He can also utilize Tikal's Prayer to grant himself a brief boost in power, as seen the second time that he shattered the Master Emerald.

Rouge the Bat[]

I'm from out of town. Is there a big, strong echidna around who can show me the sights?

–Rouge teases Knuckles, SU: #67

Knuckles and Rouge have had a strange relationship since their first meeting, due in part to the fact that Rouge attempted to steal the Master Emerald and Knuckles is sworn to protect it. Knuckles has often been the recipient of Rouge's flirtatious nature, and she delights in teasing him.

Relic the Pika[]

So far, Knuckles' relationship with Relic seemed to be something that he just tolerates. Possibly because of her energy and desire to investigate every inch of Angel Island, he seems to view her as more of a bother, though he does trust her enough to let her watch the Master Emerald, though he has a major desire to get back before she did anything. However, when Vector teased Knuckles about Relic being his girlfriend, his reaction - to glare at him - shows that he doesn't view her in that way, most likely because his duty as Guardian of the Master Emerald comes first. In interactions with Relic herself, however, he seems to appreciate her presence, and does his best to apologize when he inadvertently makes it seem like she's unwelcome. When Rouge made a similar guess about their relationship, Knuckles was embarrassed and had to explain to an astonished Relic that he hadn't made any claims about her being his girlfriend.

Knuckles is a very driven individual with an almost single-minded focus on protecting Angel Island and the Master Emerald from anyone who would do them harm. However, he also recognizes the danger the Master Emerald poses in the hands of villainous powers, and has demonstrated on more than one occasion a willingness to shatter it into fragments in order to keep it safe. Knuckles has also demonstrated enough sense to realize that a threat to the planet is a threat to his island as well, and has left Angel Island on more than one occasion in order to combat a threat to the world. In this he often finds himself working alongside Sonic and Tails, though he and Sonic enjoy a friendly rivalry in addition to friendship.

Knuckles has proven somewhat gullible over the years, with Dr. Eggman tricking him into fighting Sonic on several occasions. He is hot-tempered and quick to act without thinking, usually choosing violence over discussion. Patience is another area in which Knuckles is not at his strongest, but despite this he is a trustworthy friend and powerful ally.

According to several media, his favorite food is grapes. He is also afraid of ghosts, as seen in the game Sonic Adventure 2 at the beginning of the battle against King Boom Boo.

Background Information[]

  • As a result of the reboot done in STH #252, Ian Flynn has confirmed that the established history of Knuckles is no longer canon. He's also expressed relief at not having his history being the "Hot Pocket of Destiny".
  • Prior to the reboot, the various Sonic Adventure 2 adaptations featured in the comic didn't feature Knuckles, despite his fairly prominent role in the story of the game. However, following the reboot, it is assumed that Knuckles' participation was the same as in the actual game.
