Forums: Index > Watercooler > Selecting an Article of the Week.

Hello everyone, Arbiter here. As some of you are aware, I select the new Article of the Week every Sunday for display on the main page. Often, when I select a new Article of the Week, I pick articles that are related to the current issue release (for example, the current issue out as of today is Sonic Universe #26, and I picked alternate Lara-Su for the Article of the Week). However, I've run into a minor complication...

As of this SU issue, due to all of the new characters in the story arc, there are no more satisfactory articles I can select for the new Article of the Week for the remaining two issues of the Silver arc. For the main series, I might have a few more before I run into the same complication.

So I've decided that I'm going to create a new system on selecting the Article of the Week. Aside from users submitting their choices in the candidates section (see here), I'm also going to create a "tally system" to allow users to cast their vote on the same article like this:

Dimitri - recommended by (sign your username here)

  • (another user signs his/her username here)
  • (another user signs his/her username here)

The article that receives the most votes will be selected and the user(s) will be notified. If there is more than one article with the same amount of votes, then I will go by the following:

  • the amount of time it has been since it was last "Article of the Week" (I tend to look at articles that have not been selected within the past 6 months or more and the number of times it has been selected).
  • if the article depicts a character/place that is relevant to the current issue out or if something major happens to the character/place.
  • Is the article up to date on all pertinent information in the last issue the character/place was in?

If there are no recommended articles on the candidates list, then I will select a random Article of the week as I did before.

I'll admit, I feel bad about not putting the candidates list in full effect, but not many users have been using it and a majority of them have been recommending poorly written articles or stubs. So I'm going to try this out and see where it goes. However, if I see it getting it out of hand, I'll stop this system and simply select the articles myself again. I do not want it to come to that, but I want all users to know that I'm not playing around. And remember, the rules and regulations on selecting an Article of the Week still apply (see here for more details) I'll update this forum topic if I want to add any new information on here. If any users have any questions on this, please post them on here or on my talkpage. Arbiter0416 16:32, March 20, 2011 (UTC)

Articles of the Week need to be well written and adhere to the Manual of Style. If they don't at least do that, the article shouldn't be made Article of the Week. Just something to look for when going through the different articles. One thing that really bothers me is how long a lot of the entries are getting. For example, look at the Dimitri article. Most of the information is concise and covers the important details. Once you start getting to more recent issues the decriptions of events from single issues are written as huge paragraphs. We need to keep information much more concise, especially for characters like Sonic where eventually the article is just going to get too long if people just add in a complete summary of what he does every issue. - Dimitri the Echidna 09:32, March 30, 2011 (UTC)
