Summary[]

Story One[]

The Forgotten Tribe: Part Two of Three - "Covenant"

Iago, a member of the Lost Tribe, struggles to hold on to his wife and child as they hang over a pit of lava. Athair is certain that no one will die, but Iago lets go of his wife, hoping to spare her life by not dragging her down with him. Athair uses his Chaos powers to hover the tribe members over the lava. Knuckles notices an echidna who is nearly touching the lava and takes him back on land. The echidna is shocked to see that he is unharmed and watches as Knuckles' burns quickly disappear. Yanar to contemplates the mysterious power of the Guardians. Meanwhile, the Chaotix arrive at Constable Remington's office. Remington explains that Knuckles has left the Floating Island on an urgent mission and that they are to assume his duties until he returns, alongside Julie-Su.

That night, the tribe sets up camp when Yanar, Athair, and Knuckles gather around a fire. Knuckles asks Athair why he abandoned his duties as a Guardian. Athair explains that his childhood was much like Knuckles', with his mother, Janelle-Li, training him for his duties and vanishing beyond the wall of fire to the Forbidden Zone. Soon after accepting his role as Guardian, the Ancient Walkers appeared to give him a greater purpose, teleporting him to the Lost Tribe. With their last leader, Himon, recently deceased, the tribe believed that Athair was their Mitre: the one who would show them the way to the fabled Albion. Torn between his duties as Guardian and his need to serve the people, young Athair was teleported to Haven by the Walkers. Athair appreciated his mother's sacrifice, understanding that the work she was doing as a part of the Brotherhood was greatly important. However, upon explaining the situation with the tribe to her, Janielle-Li returned to her Guardian post so Athair could assist the Walkers.

Knuckles is a bit confused, prompting Athair to explain Haven and the Brotherhood to him very briefly. He then tells Knuckles of his travels with the tribe, experiencing the Soultouch and falling in love with Crystal-La, leading to marriage and a son: Sabre. Years later, the Ancient Walkers informed Athair and Sabre of Janelle-Li's ill health. Athair refused to return to the Floating Island, which encouraged Sabre to become a Guardian in his stead under the guidance of Archimedes. Knuckles asks if the tribe could find another Mitre, but Athair explains that the Tomes had decreed him the final Mitre of the tribe. He explains to Knuckles that Dr. Robotnik's SWATbots captured and Roboticized many members of the tribe, including Crystal-La. Knuckles, overwhelmed by the story, heads to bed. Athair tells Yanar that this night would be the final time they speak because he has a higher path to follow for the Walkers, his only regret being that he wouldn't finish their journey.

In the morning, Knuckles wakes up and Yanar tells him that Athair has gone. Knuckles is enraged, thinking Athair abandoned the tribe, but Yanar explains that it is Knuckles' turn to lead the tribe. Following Athair's instructions, the tribe arrives in the Kingdom of Mercia. One of the tribe members, Mari-An, asks Knuckles if he's seen her brothers Zax and Raynor. Knuckles instructs Yanar to camp the tribe nearby while he heads out with Mari-An to find the children. Moments later, the tribe is located by the High Sheriff's robots, who take the tribe members prisoner. Yanar is thrown into a prison cell with Sonic and Tails. Meanwhile, Knuckles and Mari-An split up to cover more ground. Knuckles wonders if he's lost, unaware that an archer hides in the trees above, waiting to strike.
