Antoine D'Coolette is a proud member of the Freedom Fighters from the Kingdom of Acorn on Westside Island. He is a faithful and longtime member of the team and beloved husband of fellow teammate Bunnie D'Coolette. He is a brave-if occasionally nervous-and noble individual with a serious attitude who alongside his comrades stands up against the forces of the evil Dr. Eggman and his Eggman Empire.
Antoine was born into a subsidiary noble family in Eurish. As a young boy, he was sent to Mobotropolis as part of an exchange program, and took with him his father's sword and an admonition to be brave. He swore himself to the king's service, but soon found himself terrified by the rise of Dr. Eggman. Fleeing with others to Knothole, he tried to assuage his wounded pride by staying close to Princess Sally, though in truth he was terrified of the idea of leaving Knothole. Over time, Sally's confidence impressed him to the point that he found himself attracted to her; unfortunately, Sally did not reciprocate his feelings. Matters only grew worse when Sonic the Hedgehog arrived and demonstrated superior abilities and confidence that exposed Antoine's false bravado for what it was. (SSD: #8, #11; SU: #84)
However, Antoine soon found a true source of bravery that made him want to try harder: Bunnie Rabbot. Inspired by her determined effort to learn to function again after becoming a cyborg, Antoine joined the Freedom Fighters alongside her and worked with her. Eventually, Antoine found the courage to admit to Bunnie that he considered himself a coward. Bunnie responded by commending him for his courage-despite his fear he had continued to fight the good fight. She then revealed that Antoine's courage had inspired her as well. Having realized that Bunnie had become more to him than a comrade or friend, Antoine asked her to marry him, and the couple continued to fight for the freedom of Mobius. The couple enjoyed happiness but also experienced sorrow, such as when Nicole informed them that Antoine's parents had died after faithful service to the Kingdom of Acorn. (SSD: #8, #11)
At some point in the past, Lupe the Wolf's village was invaded by Dr. Eggman's forces. Thankfully, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sally Acorn and Antoine D'Coolette came to her aid. When Sonic ran off to follow and defeat Dr. Eggman, Antoine attempted to defend Sally and Lupe, but Lupe, both encouraged by Sally's words and enraged by her own loss, took Antoine's sword and successfully destroyed an approaching Motobug, freeing the Mobini inside of it. Countdown to Chaos
- From a reader's perspective, this picks up from where the original pre-Super Genesis Wave continuity left off
In recent days, Antoine had been dispatched to Knothole to accompany Uncle Chuck in investigating mysterious tremors that recently began affecting the planet, as well as the mysterious purple gas seeping from the cracks it opened in the ground. Soon, Sonic and Tails arrived in the village, after being informed by Rotor of their location, and catching Antoine completely off guard as the pair gleefully embraced him. After some persuasion, Tails handed him a heavily glitch-ridden Nicole (in her handheld form); in a flash, Antoine experienced a flood of memories from an entire alternate life in an alternate timeline, apparently erased by the recently-emitted Super Genesis Wave. This left the swordsman shaken, particularly at a more recent memory of a near-death experience that left him comatose. At that point, another tremour occurred, and Antoine and the duo acted quickly to rescue Chuck from falling down an opened crater. Sonic and Tails then asked their friend to accompany them to their next destinatin, to which Antoine declined because of his duty to watch over Uncle Chuck and his research. Instead, Antoine requested that the pair give a message to his wife, Bunnie, when they found her. (StH: #254)
After Chuck, and his apprentice Ben Muttski departed for Spagonia, Antoine rushed back to Sky Patrol, to meet Sonic, Tails and Bunnie on their return from Metropolis Zone. Just like he himself had experienced before, Bunnie took Nicole in hand and had her head filled with memories from the same alternate timeline. She fell into his embrace, crying, as she tried to digest the differences between the two sets of memories, particularly at how she'd had her robotic limbs restored in the other timeline. He did his best to comfort her, and remained on the Sky Patrol with her while Sonic and Tails went to find Sally and Amy. The Freedom Fighters were happily reunited, but their happiness was brief, as Sally and Amy had their own traumatic memories of the original timeline restored. Then Nicole reported an even greater problem: the residual effects of the Super Genesis Wave were causing the planet to break apart. (StH: #255, #256)
Shattered World CrisisNot allowing their own struggles to keep them out of action in the midst of a crisis, Antoine and his teammates traveled to Station Square to help in relief efforts their. During the mission, Antoine and Bunnie struggled with their conflicting memories of the two timelines, as they remembered both being in Station Square to help fight Chaos and not being there at the same time. Following their efforts, they soon had to deal with another problem: Uncle Chuck and his colleague Professor Pickle had been abducted by E-106 Eta. Traveling to the Soleanna Forest Zone, Antoine and his friends flew into action to intercept Eta's Egg Train, with Antoine piloting his Twister plane. They soon rescued the professors, who informed them of Gaia Temples and their potential to restore the planet to normal in conjunction with the Chaos Emeralds. Thus tasked with their new mission, the heroes set out to find both temples and Emeralds, with Antoine joining Sally and Tails in recovering one from Crystal Cave. While they successfully infiltrated the cave undetected and recovered the Emerald, at Sally's urging they had Nicole reactivate the defense systems so that Eggman would be aware of their intrusion and thus not harm the pristine cave. They successfully returned to the Sky Patrol despite dealing with various Badniks-including an E-1000 unit-where Bunnie joked with her husband as to whether he was planning on upgrading her wedding ring. Carrying on the joke, Antoine replied that were he to do so with an Emerald, he would need a green one to match her eyes. (StH: #257, #258, #259, #260, #261, #262)
Unfortunately, Antoine and his friends' intrusion was noted by Eggman's underlings, and the doctor began preparing traps for the heroes. Unaware of this, the heroes made their way to Soumerca in search of the next Emerald. Along the way Rotor treated them to a tour of the Sky Patrol that was briefly interrupted by the attack of the War Walrus, which Rotor quickly dealt with. The D'Coolettes then went on a mission together to Harbor Heights, where they helped various citizens-including a pair of newlyweds-escape the damage caused by the Shattered World Crisis. Afterwards, Bunnie approached her husband and expressed her fear at the idea of losing him, prompting Antoine to express his confidence that they would never be separated. The pair later joined Sally as part of Team Freedom to pursue a Chaos Emerald, only to run into the triple threat of E-108 Iota, E-109 Kappa, and E-110 Lambda. Overwhelmed by the superior arsenals of their enemies, the trio attempted to secure the Emerald only for it to be flown away to Eggman. When Team Fighters flew in to aid them, both groups were caught in a trap, and only saved by the intervention of their remaining Sky Patrol teammates led by Cream the Rabbit. Beaten and battered, they were encouraged by Sonic upon his return from training with Moss the Sloth to master his Werehog form. (StH: #263, #264, #265, #266, #267)
The chance for another Chaos Emerald came to the team when they learned of the Chaos Emerald Championship, though only Sonic, Amy, and Tails were able to enter the tournament. Prior to departing, Sonic shared his history with Breezie the Hedgehog, something he had previously shared due to Breezie's betrayal. He described it in goofy fashion as one of the occasions when he had been "played for a chump!" Antoine noted with a smirk that he thought he might enjoy those stories, leading to a gentle reprimand from Bunnie. The D'Coolettes and their other friends not entered into the tournament managed to enjoy watching it on TV, with Antoine preparing a large batch of popcorn. During the final round, he rooted for Knuckles the Echidna over Sonic. Afterwards, he and Bunnie were absent from the Sky Patrol on a scouting mission-along with Sonic and Amy-when the ship was attacked by a group of Dark Gaia's Minions. (StH: #268, #269, #272; SU: #71, #74)He later accompanied Sonic and their new friend Chip on a mission to Apotos, where Antoine learned of a recent encounter Sonic had with Silver the Hedgehog after they battled a patrol of Badniks. They then met the sage Gregorios and learned of the Gaia Gate and Gaia Keys, though Sonic took occasion to mock Antoine's outbursts over Gregorios' revelations. The pair-with Sonic in Werehog form-were then forced to battle several of Dark Gaia's Minions led by a Dark Gaia Titan. Fortunately, Bunnie arrived with Amy and Knuckles to aid the pair, and they discovered that a shard of the broken Master Emerald had somehow become embedded in the Titan's chest. Antoine managed to pry it free and was sent flying, and caught by his wife, who only put him down after a bit of playful teasing. Now armed with information that would help them locate the Gaia Keys and thus access the temples, the group returned to the Sky Patrol. They then proceeded to Crystal Desert Zone to meet up with a G.U.N. unit who had recovered a Chaos Emerald, only to find them the victims of an attack launched by Metal Sonic. Fortunately, Antoine and his teammates were able to get the soldiers medical attention, and Sonic soon returned with the recovered Emerald. (StH: #272; SU: #75)
Following Sonic's disappearance, Antoine and his teammates were called back to Mobotropolis on an urgent mission: to defend the city from the attacking M'egga Man. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts and the assistance of Gemerl, the heroes proved to be no match for the corrupted Mega Man. His mission to set up one of Sigma-1's Unity Engines proved successful, linking Mobius to Earth 20XX and leading to meetings between the Freedom Fighters and Robot Masters of that world. Joined by the Maverick Hunters and Team Sticks, the heroes made their way aboard the Sky Patrol in order to take the fight to the enemy. They soon set their course for the Lost Hex, and along the way Antoine found a fellow swordsman in Zero of the Maverick Hunters. (StH: #273; SU: #77)
Unfortunately, the pair would be forced to wield their swords against an army of Mechaniloids assembled by Sigma, and then against each other when the Deadly Six took control of the heroes' robotics, including Bunnie's. Unlikely allies Eggman and Dr. Wily managed to free the victimized heroes, but Antoine and his friends were then forced to face Sigma's Maverick army. Weakened by their previous battles, Antoine and his friends were unable to fight off enemies such as Boomer Kuwanger. Fortunately, the heroes of the Street Fighter Zone arrived to help the heroes fight off a handful of the villains. As part of a plan formulated by Sally and inspired by Sticks the Badger, the heroes then split into smaller groups to follow the Mavericks and recruit new allies. Eventually the small army of allies launched a massive attack on Sigma, and managed to destroy his defenses. However, he then unveiled the mighty Sigma-3 form, which Super Sonic and Super Mega Man were forced to challenge. Xander Payne's actions later erased the conflict from history, returning Antoine and all the others to their previous places with only vague memories of what had transpired. Restoring the Planet
Antoine later joined Big and Sonic on a mission to Shamar, where they sought to protect one of the Gaia Key Guardians from the local Egg Army. This would force them into an alliance with the Desert Raiders. Antoine then traveled to Yurashia alongside other Freedom Fighters to assist the Shijin Warriors in saving another key guardian from the Egg Clan Army and the corrupted Gaia Phoenix. (StH: #278, #279, #281, #282)
Antoine is a dutiful soldier and valiant fighter, something he has achieved despite youthful fears largely through Bunnie's example and help. While he still has the tendency to be anxious about things, he is quick to put it aside when needed. Antoine has envied Sonic's superior abilities over the years, and puts on bravado not unlike the Hedgehog's in battle while enjoying any opportunity to be amused as Sonic's expense. Speaking both French and English, he struggles occasionally with the latter, particularly during intense situations, and will sometimes use an incorrect word. Apart from his wife Bunnie and his efforts to defeat the evils that threaten the world, Antoine's greatest passion seems to be cooking.
Antoine is an anthropomorphic coyote about a meter tall. He has mainly reddish-brown fur with pale yellow fur on his front torso, muzzle and cheek turfs, blue eyes, and as well short and neatly combed blonde hair on his head. For attire, he wears red boots and arm cuffs, and a French uniform sash. He also has a belt colored red and white, with a gray belt buckle and white-colored gloves and leg cuffs.
Antoine is a trained and skilled swordsman and skilled in hand-to-hand combat. While not the equal of Sonic in speed, he does have impressive agility, and can perform a variation of the Spin Dash that employs his sword to create a buzz-saw like effect.
From a young age, Antoine found himself inspired by Bunnie, whose struggle to function again inspired him to do more. Years later, Bunnie revealed that Antoine had inspired her with his own courage, and the comradery between the two blossomed into romance. They eventually married. (SSD: #8, #9)
Before falling for Bunnie, Antoine initially had feelings for Sally. He attempted to woo her on many occasions, but the young princess rejected him at every turn. Nontheless, Sally has always considered Antoine as a friend and a trusted ally. (SSD: #8)
- When frightened or surprised, Antoine often exclaims "Mon dieu!", implying that he may be religious (though it is the French version of "My God!", as in an exclamation, which is often used regardless of religious faith).
- In real world, coyotes are animals found exclusively in North America, due to this there is the possibility of Antoine being a descendant of Northamer immigrants who decided to live in Eurish.
- In the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series in the episode "Fed Up with Antoine", Antoine's full name was revealed to be Antoine Depardieu, not D'Coolette. Many consider this name non-canon, and an example of the dissonance between the Archie and SatAM versions of the story. He was recently called Depardieu in StH: #226.
- According to Aleah Baker on the Bumbleking Forums, Antoine's age in the post-SGW reality is 17 years old; but adds that it could change.
- Ian Flynn later stated in a Q&A that Antoine loves fine cuisine and loathes the idea of anyone ruining it. Additionally, he and Bunnie have learned to stay out of each other's way when it comes to cooking.
- Antoine's variant on the spin dash in which he employs the use of his sword may have been inspired by one of Sonic's own moves in the game Sonic and the Black Knight, where Sonic uses a sword as part of the gameplay, and performs a similar move when using his own spin dash.
